2019 Southern 80 – Sunday morning wrap, Chief leads pack

A pair of prodigious teenagers behind Chief have led the fleet home with the fastest time on the second morning of racing at the Southern 80 on the Murray River.

Taking on the 80km, 126 bend course from Torrumbarry to Vic Park in Echuca alongside 86 other boats, Chief clocked 35mins 20.24sec to win from Elm Street (36:26.27) and Bad Temper (37:57.74).

Incredibly, both Chief (pictured above with supporters) and Elm Street were in the under 16 boy’s expert class, showing that the future of river racing is looking bright.

The winning team of skiers Jake Rawe and Tate Laub, driver Darren Laub and observer Daniel Shipp not only posted the morning’s quickest time but did so under challenging conditions as they charged down the river passing a host of slower boats.

“It was tough out there, really rough,” Tate Laub said. “Sometimes we were three wide.”

The quartet won the same class last year and for Echuca / Moama locals Rawe and Shipp, the win was particularly pleasing with a throng of friends and family cheering them on from the river bank.

Bad Temper’s effort was enough to give them the victory in the super social class, a back-to-back win for them too.

Not to be outdone by the success of the leading boats in the U16 boy’s event, the girl’s classes produced some awesome performances.

The Contractor (44:35.88) towed the quickest women’s pair of the day, with driver Neil Donald and observer Claire Lee guiding skiers Jaymi Clancy and Jasmin Payne to victory in the new under 16 girl’s expert class.

Thundernuts 500 claimed the under 14 girl’s expert in 47:20.90 courtesy of skiers Kasey Branson and Sharna Dominguez, driver Brett Dominguez and observer Daniel Branson.

Solid Gold triumphed in the new under 12 girl’s expert, the team of Samantha Hedley (driver), Michael Butcher (observer) and skiers Senna Hedley and Leilani Cartledge posting an impressive 52:07.13.

In other classes:

Brutal won the 70mph expert
Cosmos proved too good in the under 14 boy’s expert
Aggression took out the 60mph expert
Hanka Chief was the victor in the under 12 boy’s expert
• the weekend warrior division went to Hitman

The Sunday afternoon session will feature almost 120 boats led away from Torrumbarry at 12.30pm AEDT by yesterday’s Bakers Blitz winner TR.
