It is with great sadness that Ski Racing Australia, the regulatory body for Ski Racing in Australia, and the Moama Water Sports Club, have confirmed the death of a man in an incident at the Southern 80 along the Murray River today.
The name of the competitor involved has been confirmed as Mr David Morabito, 50, of Grose Vale in New South Wales.
The incident occurred just after 1.20pm (AEST) during the main race of Sunday’s Southern 80. It is understood that Mr Morabito, the driver of 2 Ironic, was pulled from the water unconscious near Norris Bend where Ambulance Paramedics conducted full resuscitation efforts. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Chairman of Ski Racing Australia, Mr Paul Robertson, said he wished to offer his condolences to Mr Morabito’s family and friends, saying the incident has saddened the sport. SRA will provide all possible support to those involved.
Mr Morabito was a highly respected driver who had been involved with ski racing for many years. He is survived by his wife Katrina, son Sean and daughter Alicia.
